Andrea

Carol kisses Andrea on a divan beside an open poolside archway, gripping his white T-shirt as warm evening light fills the room.
It takes something more than intelligence to act intelligently.
~Fyodor Dostoevsky

Andrea had prepared the words he meant to give Carol, careful enough to soften the truth without humiliating either of them. He was sitting near the edge of the divan, one arm still caught in the cardigan hanging from his shoulders, when she stepped between his knees and kissed him.

He stayed there, palm pressed into the cushion behind him, as though staying upright had become easier than moving away. Carol leaned closer without hesitation. He caught the lure of her perfume first, then the warmth of her skin and the taste of her lipstick. His body recognized proximity, warmth, and the first pressure of contact.

Andrea turned into the kiss.
